One of her first jobs was working as a nurses aide at a rest home in rural Alabama where she remembers wiping brown streams of chewing tobacco-tinged drool from the faces of old women who were too weak or disoriented to clean their own faces. My mom told me many touching, cringeworthy and funny stories throug...

Recently, our friends at the Salt Lake Tribune ran an online poll to see which local purveyor of Philly cheesesteak sandwiches was preferred. Though weve got some fine cheesesteak slingers in this great state of ours, I can definitely support those leading the pack, such as Moochies (multiple locations, moochiesmeatballs.com), whose cheesesteaks are beloved from Salt Lake to Lehi. Another was Sandys The Philadelphian (9860 S. 700 East, 801-572-3663, phillyutah.com), the dark horse that has bui...

This week, City Weekly asked some questions of the local music community—whether theyre players themselves, simple fans, or the kind of people who work in other capacities like managing venues, booking shows and otherwise doing the work to make our music scene what it is. The Way the World Works The Staten Island Zoo is weathering a storm of controversy over the prediction made by its resident groundhog, Staten Island Chuck, on Feb. 2—an annual event at the zoo. Chuck popped up on a Facebook "livestream" at the designated hour, on the designated day, but something seemed ... off. After hours of accumulating snow in the New York area, the New York Post reported, Chuck was seen to emerge into bright sunlight with no snow on the ground, his handlers wearing swea...

Tanner Humanities Lecture: A Conversation With Martha S. Jones February is Black History Month, but even those of us who grew up learning a few names of notable historical African-Americans probably cant come up with a female name beyond Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman. And even as the 2020 election elevated the significance of Black women as a game-changing voting...
