A nearly $7 million federal grant is helping address Minnesota’s long standing shortage of school counselors. Those doing the work now in northwestern Minnesota say the needs are greater than ever.

“Kids are saying, ‘Hey, help me, I’m anxious. I’m crying in class, I don’t know what to do. I need to talk about this.’ And we don’t have the resources to talk to them.”

The fundraiser will include a silent auction from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., a pulled pork dinner provided by Lazy Jack's from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and a Corey Medina concert starting at 7 p.m.

Summer projects, social studies and school board committees were among several topics of discussion for the Bemidji Area Schools Board of Education at its regular meeting on Monday.

District Curriculum Director Colleen Cardenuto was the point person for part of Monday’s Bemidji Area Schools Board of Education meeting where she presented the district’s Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment results from the 2021-2022 school year.

The Bemidji Area Schools Board of Education will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 19, in the district office board room for their first regular meeting of the 2022-2023 school year. The public can attend the meeting in person or watch the meeting on the Bemidji Area Schools YouTube channel.

Born in 1916 in Minneapolis, Horace May played baseball for Minneapolis North High School, then played for the Minnesota Gophers. May moved to Bemidji after World War II to teach physical education and coach Lumberjacks baseball.

The Bemidji Area Schools Board of Education discussed a smattering of topics during Monday’s board meeting ranging from ESSER III funding to the superintendent search to COVID case numbers across the district.
