Caltrans announced it will formally reopen Sonora Pass on Highway 108 at 3 p.m. Thursday, following five weeks of snow removal work.

“Avalanches occur in every steep, snowy and mountain environment,” a Sierra Avalanche Center forecaster said.

Highway 395 and 108 continue to remain open for traffic as progress continues on the Boot Fire, which has burned 6,898 acres and is 39 percent contained as of Sunday morning.

A wild fire is actively burning Monday in Mono County on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s Bridgeport Ranger District west of US Highway 395 about five miles north of Sonora Junction, near Chris Flat Campground.
