Kansas City lawmakers recently approved millions in state and federal funding for the four-block South Loop project, getting them significantly closer to their fundraising goal. Officials hope the first half of the park could be finished by the 2026 World Cup.

“The South Loop is an active reclamation of space for all Kansas Citians. It will be a call to action for healing the wounds created by our highway system throughout the urban core,” said Jon Stephens, president and CEO Kansas City’s port authority.

Backers of a South Loop park atop Interstate 670 say the project could spark $685 million in construction that would include about 1,200 apartments downtown.

The South Loop Link could create substantial financial benefits for downtown Kansas City, some of which will help sustain the park after it opens.

Planners of the South Loop Project reveled their latest park design during the third public meeting on Tuesday night.

Civic leaders remain hopeful that private businesses and philanthropists will assist in raising more money for the project.

The $200 million South Loop Project would cover 4.6 acres on the south edge of downtown Kansas City.

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson joined local officials Thursday night to sign a bill that brings additional funding to a project that would connect downtown to the Crossroads Arts District.

Part of the project includes a 5.5-acre park built over I-670 from Wyandotte Street to Grand Boulevard.
