BRIDGEPORT Former Democratic state Sen. Ed Gomes, 84, is in critical condition after a collision on Boston Avenue on Sunday night, according to relatives and city officials.
“He had head injuries. . He pulled through his operation. He’s not really out of the woods, yet,” one of Gomes’ brothers, William Aranjo, said Monday afternoon.
“We’re just praying for the best,” said the former state legislator’s niece, Latoya Johnson-Aranjo, Monday. While she described him as a very tough man, “he’s not 20 years old.”
Three people suffered serious injuries in a crash overnight in Fairfield County.
It happened around 9:20 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, on the Yellow Mill Bridge located on Stratford Avenue in Bridgeport.
A black 2010 Honda Civic was traveling westbound on Stratford Avenue approaching the Yellow Mill Bridge at a high rate of speed when it crossed over into the eastbound lane of Stratford Avenue and crashed into a gray 2016 Hyundai Sonata, said Captain Kevin Gilleran of the Bridgeport Police Department.
The crash caused severe damage to both vehicles and the closure of the bridge until 1:45 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 12.
The Hyundai Sonata was traveling eastbound when it was struck on the bridge, said police.

BRIDGEPORT, CT A former state senator was critically injured in a motor vehicle crash Sunday evening, according to police. Edwin Gomes, 84, sustained serious injuries in the wreck on Boston Avenue.
Another driver, Clive Henry, 19, of Bridgeport, sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the wreck.
Emergency services received a call at 6:53 p.m. regarding a two-car crash at the intersection of Boston Avenue and Noble Avenue, according to police.

Henry was driving a red 2002 Acura RSX was traveling westbound on Boston Avenue approaching the intersection with Noble Avenue as a gray 2010 Ford Fusion driven by Gomes was traveling eastbound on Boston Avenue.

BRIDGEPORT Three people were seriously injured in a crash on the Yellow Mill Bridge on Friday night, police said.
The Bridgeport Emergency Operations Center received a report of a two-vehicle crash on the Yellow Mill Bridge on Stratford Avenue at 9:20 p.m.
Capt. Kevin Gilleran said in a release that “a black 2010 Honda Civic was traveling westbound on Stratford Avenue approaching the Yellow Mill Bridge at a high rate of speed when it crossed over into the eastbound lane of Stratford Avenue and crashed into a gray 2016 Hyundai Sonata.
