Spotted Crake News Today

After an eventful spring, Graham Gordon found September and October to be just as productive in the Arabian desert.

August is always reliable for the local birder and 2022 was no different, as bumper Pied Flycatcher and Garganey numbers were enjoyed along with some exciting seawatching.

Widespread Ring Ouzels accompanied decent tallies of Black Kite and Red-rumped Swallow as spring migration ramped up.

A major Garganey influx and returning spring migrants made for an enjoyable month of birding.

Migrants increasing in numbers – Jubail Whilst birding Jubail recently there was good signs of increased migration. Migration this year has been a bit slow in the early period but now many migrants are passing such as Spotted Crake, Spotted Flycatcher, Common Redstart, Whinchat, Great Reed Warbler, Yellow Wagtails, Red-throated Pipits, Tree Pipits, European Bee-eaters and both Turkestan and Daurian Shrikes. Spotted Crake - Jubail Whilst birdwatching the Jubail area in early April, we found a Spotted Crake on the edge of a large wet puddle and took the below photographs. Spotted Crake is an uncommon passage migrant with a few birds overwintering in some years.
