Ireland is a country that allows itself very little in the way of nostalgia. The past is there mostly to be laughed at or demonised. The latest opportunity to do both came our way just last week with the announcement by Justice Minister, Helen McEntee, that the Censorship of Publications Act of 1929 is to be abolished. Excellent. More progress. Another chance to pat ourselves on the back.

Shout out to Paul Lynch, whose fifth novel Prophet Song — on the Booker shortlist — showcases an Irish dystopia set in a future so ordinary and relatable it could be happening the week after next.
