“Nobody wants to be on strike, and nobody wants to be the first,” said the union’s president. “But it feels really inspiring.”

State employee unions have threatened to strike in the past, but none have ever walked off the job.

The union has other hurdles it would need to clear before it could strike, but impasse is the first step.

State scientists had never voted in favor of a strike in their union’s 40-year history.

“This is probably the biggest turnout we’ve ever had,” said one union leader.

“We recognize that it’s beyond time for us to get these people some better salaries,” said one lawmaker.
