Wildfires have forced the majority of the Northwest Territories’ 45,600 residents to leave their communities, with Alberta absorbing most of the evacuees

Alberta is welcoming residents from the Northwest Territories after evacuation orders were issued due to wildfire activity.

The Town of Hay River said late Sunday night that wildfires have burned property and structures in Paradise Gardens and south through Enterprise.

The community of Hay River, N.W.T., is evacuating due to a nearby wildfire. Residents are being told to head for the airport, as a new fire near Paradise Gardens and Garden Road has closed Highway 2 out of the community.

Officials in Hay River say river breakup is now imminent, and want to make sure people in the area are prepared for a flood.
