A rare Galápagos tortoise which was thought to have gone extinct centuries ago has been found alive by scientists from Princeton University.

Fernanda the giant tortoise is currently the last and only known tortoise in her species.

Researchers this week confirmed that a rare tortoise discovered in 2019 is part of a long-considered-extinct species, the fantastic giant tortoise - 'with a current known population size of a single individual.'

Scientists assumed that the chelonoidis phantasticus had died out more than a century ago. The species is better known as the ‘fantastic giant tortoise’ and is native to the Galápagos Fernandina island.

The last known ‘fantastic giant tortoise’ was found in 1906. Now, scientists have discovered another one.

DNA analysis showed a recently discovered Galápagos Islands tortoise was the same species as a specimen found in 1906, according to a new paper.

Scientists had thought the fantastic giant tortoise, or Chelonoidis phantasticus, had been extinct. Then they found Fernanda.
