Coeur d’Alene residents are accustomed now to towering cranes downtown, lifting high-rises into existence. But that wasn't the case 40 years ago.

I missed the commotion that day. And it has bugged me since.

In Coeur d’Alene’s 1960s, when hydroplanes thrilled spectators and a swimsuit competition was part of pageantry, a young woman in a modest bathing suit caused a stir.

Frank Reasoner is a part of the fabric of the Kellogg community. As a decorated war hero, he is often remembered for how he died. During the annual Kellogg High School Sports Awards ceremony, he is remembered for how he lived.

Countless people see the sculpture every year, perhaps not realizing the dramatic history behind it. Today, the memorial is in need of restorations.
