Today. >> over the last couple years, putin has been more and more isolated. hes not been in the kremlin for the most part. hes been down at his place in sochi or in his dhaka outside of moscow. when youre an authoritarian leader and you have less and less input, and youre only hearing from people who want to say to the boss, youre right, i think that leads to miscalculation. i think that is what has happened in the case of this invasion in ukraine. >> joining me now, history professor ruth, the...

Vladimir putin is a strongman. i didnt say a man who is strong. thats not the same thing. hes a strongman. he requires this a tina, this mask -- this patina, this strength. whats going to happen as he continues to bomb apartment buildings. destroy ukrainian oil depots and the body bags start to mount up. what happens when he loses support at home? russians arent even polling a majority in support for him trying to keep ukraine out of nato which wasnt even on the table. thats one thing about stro...

Stakeholder groups in his circle but you also look at how the game is going so far, and the simple answer to that, the game is not going well for either constituency in his circle, which we can talk about the strongmen and the oligarchs. and what it means is that the blitzkrieg that was planned, obviously, this was planned as a short engagement with limited troops. that plan didnt work. kyiv still stands. ukraine still stands. president zelenskyy is a leader of a nationwide resistance, and so th...

Ukraine is home to 4 million people -- european continent, so its a big an important place. its not the kind of place that would normally be at the center of u.s. politics. except, it very much has been. for years, ukraine has occupied an outsized role in american discourse. look at a guy like paul manafort, back in 2016 he was named chairman of the trump campaign and chief strategist. he was one of many members of rotating cast of grifters and yes men who surrounded that tribe. he was a veteran...

Were going to call the new cold war. well have to reference to the old one as the old cold war. it will be different, for example, putin is not a communist. hes not trying to literally reassemble every piece ofly the puzzle of the former soviet union, but what we are seeing and its breathtaking and frightening how quickly it has happened is a development of a new line between a washington centric bloc composed of voluntary allies and a moscow centric bloc composed of po involuntary allies who ar...

Completely out of the question, i think, at this point. >> weve seen a number of countries condemn putins actions but. then you have other countries like india with abstained you and vote condemning the invasion. whats the strategy there. i think many americans would think of india as an ally, certainly trying to be a democratic ally. but at the same time, why are they not being more forceful? its the second largest country in the world, being more forceful in condemning russias invasion. >> i t...
