St Hilda s RC School in Whitby set to close

North Yorkshire County Council has published a closure notice for St Hilda’s RC School in Whitby. With only two children remaining on roll at the school, North Yorkshire County Council’s Executive gave the go-ahead for publication of the closure notice to allow a month-long respesentation period . Anyone who wishes to view the closure proposals or make a representation can visit the County Council’s consultations page The council s executive agreed to continue with the closure process following a report by officers which explained that the proposal was not related to any issue with school standards, but due to falling rolls over a number of years and very low pupil numbers which meant that the school was not financially sustainable. The school does not have a distinct catchment but as a faith school takes pupils from Whitby and surrounding rural areas.

Message is stay at home - Police and local authorities unite in plea to residents

FOLLOWING news the nation was being locked down for a third time to address the growing Covid crisis, the overriding message from police and local authorities is to ‘stay at home’. The leader of Craven District Council Cllr Richard Foster told people to ‘act as though they had Covid-19’ and ‘play their part’ by staying home. He said: “The situation nationally is extremely serious and the numbers of Covid-19 cases are rising rapidly in Craven, as they are across the country. “I know another national lockdown is very difficult for residents and businesses. “The Government guidance about support for businesses is still being finalised and we will get this to you as soon as possible over the coming days, as we know many will be desperate for financial support.

Return to face-to-face teaching in secondary schools in Craven to be staggered

Stuart Carlton, Corporate Director of Children and Young People’s Services ALL primary schools in Craven will be open for the first day of term next week after the Christmas holidays, but the start of the school term for secondary and college students has been staggered. Following the Government s announcement earlier this week, North Yorkshire County Council says secondary schools will welcome back vulnerable children and the children of key workers to face-to-face teaching from the week beginning Monday, January 4 and this includes students attending special schools, or Pupil Referral Services. Children in exam years 11 and 13 who do not fall into this group will be prioritised for remote learning during this week.

North Yorkshire County Council’s most senior education officer said schools were the best place for children in the run-up to Christmas and that extraordinary efforts had been undertaken to make them safe environments.
