High-powered panel meets to choose next CBI chief

Cong. leader pens dissent to meeting, says committee should have chosen probables A high-powered committee, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and comprising Chief Justice of India Justice N.V. Ramana and Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary, met on Monday to finalise the choice of the next director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Three Indian Police Service (IPS) officers V.S. Kaumudi (1986 batch), Kumar Rajesh Chandra (1985) and Subodh Jaiswal (1985 batch) have been shortlisted from a list of 109 officers that included four batches (1984-1987) of the IPS. The meeting, that took place at the Prime Minister’s official residence, lasted for 90 minutes.

PM Narendra Modi (File photo) NEW DELHI: The high-powered committee, comprising PM Narendra Modi, CJI N V Ramana and Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, to select the CBI director shortlisted three IPS officers V S K Kaumudi, Subodh Jaiswal and Kumar Rajesh Chandra for the top post. One of the shortlisted candidates is likely to become the CBI director, a post that has been lying vacant for over four months. At the meeting, the CJI is learnt to have suggested that three names could be picked from the senior most in the panel and the PM said, “We will go as per the rule.” Chowdhury is learnt to have submitted a note of dissent, alleging violation of laid down procedures. He didn’t object to the names though.

Sources say, over 100 officers from 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1987 batch were under consideration, however, during the 90-minute meeting, Subodh Jaiswal, KR Chandra and VKS Kaumudi were selected as candidates for next CBI chief. The government can now appoint any officer out of these three as next CBI Director.
