A panel discussion about the need for the legalisation of same-sex marriages has highlighted the lack of awareness prevailing in Indian society about accepting queer people and the necessity to start having a dialogue with each other regarding gender and sexuality.

There is no legal bar for anyone in making their same-sex partner as a nominee in insurance policies in the name of that person, the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has confirmed in a reply to an RTI application by a Kolkata-based queer couple, Suchandra Das and Sree Mukherjee.

The official clears that there is no illegality in nominating any person, including a stranger or a legal entity.
