Kuldeep Singh Chahal is back as Commissioner of Police, Ludhiana. The order to the effect was issued on Friday. When India held its first election in 1951-52, spanning 68 phases, it cost the country Rs 10.5 crore to organise the Lok Sabha election. Since then, the cost has increased significantly, except for a drop in 1957.

After India attained independence from British rule, the first general election was held between 25th October, 1951 and 21 February, 1952.

Since 1951, India has held 17 Lok Sabha elections, mobilising hundreds of millions of voters each time. Voter turnout has steady increased over the years, peaking in 2019 at over 67 per cent - a marked rise from the 44 per cent voter turnout in 1951.
