A strong solar flare struck the Earth on Thursday and caused a shortwave radio blackout over a large area of the South Pacific, including Australia and New Zealand.

X-class solar flares are the strongest types of storms on the sun. The weakest sun flares are A-class, B- and C-class storms are also relatively moderate.

A major solar flare was seen as a bright flash at the sun's lower center this week, captured by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory. This is one of the strongest solar storms in the star's current weather cycle.
