Skeptical Science New Research for Week #43 2023

Open access notables Its always a special pleasure to note an article including Skeptical Sciences founder John Cook in the author roster. Misinformation and the epistemic integrity of democracy includes not only Cook as a collaborator but also a cast of other familiar authorities on human cognition in connection with climate science, in particlar how our mental equipment struggles with following a continuous thread of truth through a tangled knot of disconnected confusion in the form of mi...

Skeptical Science New Research for Week #41 2023

Open access notables Among five items in this weeks government/NGO section is Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratorys annual report Utility-Scale Solar, 2023 Edition, chock-a-block with statistics and graphs quantifying an explosion of installed permanent  energy sources. Photovoltaic deployment is accelerating and now outpacing wind as costs have rapidly plunged. Given the natural properties of wind and solar energy supplies, reserve power storage is very much in frame. ...

Skeptical Science New Research for Week #22 2023

Open access notables Multiple studies indicate changes in the properties of Antarctic bottom water (AABW) over the past half century. These changes involve density and hence will affect both local and distant circulation of the oceans, not least overturning effects that are vital for marine biology but also climate and weather far distant from Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. While we can see whats happening, our understanding of whats driving change is incomplete. By synthesizing multiple obs...

"Emergent constraints on tropical atmospheric aridity - Carbon feedback" by Armineh Barkhordarian, Kevin W. Bowman et al.

Carbon-climate feedbacks, which amplifies or attenuates atmospheric CO2 from fossil fuel emissions, are one of the largest sources of uncertainty in climate projections. However, these feedbacks depend both on temperature and its coupling to water and energy cycles, especially in the tropics. We show that atmospheric aridity - quantified as vapor pressure deficit (VPD) - is a good proxy for this coupling. Tropical VPD is strongly correlated to the global CO2 growth rate (CGR) with observed prese...
