A Louisville Republican filed a bill Monday to add new exceptions to Kentucky’s near-total abortion ban, including for victims of rape and incest.

Kentucky’s Republican-led legislature attempted to heavily restrict abortion medication in the state during this year’s legislative session–banning it from being sent through the mail and creating a regulatory system for doctors and pharmacists who handle it.

While the U.S. Supreme Court ruling reversing course on abortion rights sent shockwaves across the country, Kentucky lawmakers, and abortion rights advocates, have long anticipated the day.

A leaked draft of a U.S. Supreme Court signaling the court may be prepared to overturn Roe vs. Wade has sent shockwaves through the country — including Kentucky, where state laws would make the commonwealth among the first to be affected if the ruling is handed down.

Kentucky’s attorney general is arguing enforcement of a sweeping new anti-abortion rights bill need not be put on hold. But abortion providers say they can’t immediately comply with the list of new requirements.
