There aren’t many round buildings in the city. But at the corner of Hester St. and Eldridge St. in Manhattan’s Chinatown, there’s an unexpected one. Demure yet bold, the four-story school isn’t taller than its neighbors, but stands out with a figure all its own. Unlike the Guggenheim, surely the city’s most well-known rounded facade, this one isn’t just trying to be different.

For architects and designers like Wolfgang & Hite, BAAB, and Nick Poe, small-space projects have given them a chance to flex their skills in creating more space and storage where it looks like there isn’t any.

Copy New York-based SO-IL has unveiled plans for a new Brooklyn art gallery, dubbed Artes Amant. The 1,320-square-meter building will house the production, display and storage of art in a four-story "concrete mass" that is "spatially marked by its industrial past."
