The Tremont Planning Board voted to table the finding of fact for the Pointy Head Campground after nearly three hours of discussion on Oct. 11. The remainder of the discussion will now take place on Nov. 15.  

The Tremont Planning Board held a public hearing Aug. 23 regarding the Pointy Head Campground, which has been met with strong opposition from abutters.

The two sides in the eight-year battle over the resumption of quarrying in the village of Hall Quarry have until Aug. 8 to file briefs with the Mount Desert Zoning Board of Appeals. 

Jeff Gammelin, who founded Freshwater Stone in 1976 with his wife, Candy, said, “It’s the kind of project that opens up new job opportunities. We’re making an effort to get into restoration stonework.”

Harold MacQuinn Inc. and Freshwater Stone have appealed the Planning Board’s denial of their application for a license to resume quarrying in Hall Quarry. 

All along, Hall Quarry residents have cited the amount of noise generated by quarrying as their main reason for opposing the resumption of quarrying. 

Walmart seeks to cut the assessed value of the Ellsworth store from $20.1 million to $10 million. At stake is as much as $180,000 in property tax for 2017 and each year forward.
