example, the incident in canada we were talking about. if we look at the zhant happened in the u.k. about 16 months ago. the incidents tend have a tremendous amount of shock value and attackers are setting out to kill people. they re setting out to make a political statement with the actual act of the killing. and hope flay doesn t escalade to this situation. this individual so far, has not hurt any of the individuals and those ha have managed to get out not clear if they managed to escape or whether or not they were released by this individual. as this drags on without any clear political demands made it doesn t suggest to have the same patterns we ve seen where the individual wants to kill. we hope it s very early and we re 16 hours into this the situation will end peacefully. but it does have a slightly different fingerprint and hallmarks what we ve seen in the past attacks. indeed it does. ayman, stay with me throughout the remain of the hour. i want to go now to the white house
outfits go into the cafe as well. jim, thank you so much for being with me. stay with me for the remain of the program. i want to bring in ayman mohyeldin. he s in new york. i was just thinking of what as we see images of just about 15 minutes ago how this all went down, but i was thinking something jim said ayman. i want your thoughts on it which is the concern there must be right now in authorities minds about, first of all, does the guy have any accomplices and waiting for something to happen to strike out or the lone wolf person who may be inspired by what they see. these are tense moments right now, ayman. absolutely. i think there is two layers of this operation that are taking place. one is what you re seeing on the ground now unfoltding to try to rescue and save the hostages. and then two is probably more of an intelligence or big picture effort that is being taken place by authorities to paint the
hostage taker when they see the bursts and hear the sound of the explosions that is meant to shock them. in the moment of shock there s a moment paralysis that gives a tight window for the police to move in. that s what appears to have happened from what we re seeing on the images. i share that analysis with you, ayman. they certainly do disorient you. we re seeing these videos the video shot just sometime ago of some people i can t say if it s hostage or hostage taker being wheeled out of that cafe. i. to go to sara james. she s outside the perimeter where the cafe and this hostage standoff has been going on now. good morning. it was very quiet here for a period of time of hours and then all of a sudden everything erupted. first, there was the escape of about half dozen hostages
and that itself highlights the growing risk to security and intelligence officials around the world. this person may have no connections to terrorist organizations, but he can still wreak the kind of havoc we re seeing now unfold on screen. one of the things that gives one, i think, a pause for hope. the fact that no one inside there has been injured or killed that even after five innocent men and women were able to escape from the cafe there was no immediate reaction other than apparent he was upset. we re getting reports right now, ayman, as we speak there may be some hostages that are leaving or have just left that cafe. again, it is 2:00 in the morning australia time. if that is indeed happening, they are able to get out and maybe he s tires and falling asleep or maybe letting some more out with further demands. right. from a journalist perspective, there s a few ways to look at this. one, if you take a look at the attacks that have happened in the last several months for
perspective is a lot of online chatter from groups in those that have supported isis have not claimed responsibility for this. what we ve seen in the past particularly in incidents like the canadian attack that we saw in atottawa not too long ago, in the situation there s a lot of online chatter to suggest there was perhaps linkage to foreign terrorism or at least sympathetic support. in this case we re not seeing it just yet. it doesn t mean it s not going happen in the coming hours. in the initial 14 hours of this case i haven t seen a lot of online chatter to suggest this is linked to isis or perhaps as we were saying earlier, it could be an individual trying to shroud it in that isis cloak. and it just seems i m thinking ayman, we re entering in such a different world nowadays. it almost many times doesn t matter where you re from. depending on how you convert and what it is that you believe. i mean, let s think about, you know, british citizens beheading
