The DWP says the new measures will only allow it to receive "limited and relevant" information that may signal whether benefits are being improperly paid and will not allow them to see how claimants are spending their money

The trial, which was carried out in 2023, saw one of the banks identify 713,000 accounts held by individuals claiming Universal Credit, Pension Credit or ESA.
