A leak that dumped hundreds of millions of litres of untreated sewage into the Red River in south Winnipeg has finally been contained and the bypass system is fully operational, the city says.

WINNIPEG -- Residents in the city's southwest neighbourhoods are no longer being asked to reduce their water consumption.

'It’s expected the bypass system will be in place until the river crossing pipes that failed can be replaced,' Winnipeg said, adding sewage flow into the Red River has stopped.

A sewage saga continues in Winnipeg, as 90,000 residents are being asked to cut down on their water use while the city battles a pipe leak that has spewed over 200-million-litres of untreated sewage into the Red River.

Since the failure of two sewer pipes in the city's south end in early February, millions of litres of raw sewage has spilled into the red river near the Fort Garry Bridge.
