TROY — A Troy-based business that owns several local restaurants has been fined by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division for improperly employing minors.

The U.S. Department of Labor says the company classified security guards as independent contractors; they were employees under the law and entitled to overtime pay.

A Wayne County security company has been ordered to pay $151K in back wages, damages to employees.

Federal law limits the number of hours that employees ages 14 and 15 can work, and also prohibits them from working late into the evening.

A Michigan Popeyes restaurant faces a $48,000 fine for violating federal child labor laws by having teenage employees work during school hours and past legal limits.

The owner of the Popeyes was fined $48,000 after an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor.

Reliance Staffing LLC and owner Fahim Uddin allegedly misclassified 70 nurses as independent contractors, according to the US Department of Labor.
