WBUR investigations correspondent Todd Wallack joins Radio Boston for an update on the thousands of vacancies in Massachusetts' public housing system he first uncovered in 2023.

After an investigation from WBUR found that almost 2,300 units of state-funded housing are vacant amidst a record housing shortage, the state promised to make a 90-day push to fill as many open units as possible. Six months later, only 72 more units have been filled and more than 180,000 people remain on the state public housing waitlist.

Gov. Maura Healey unveiled $375 million in budget cuts for her state administration Monday, a change made to help cover a $1 billion tax shortfall. Much of the cuts affect MassHealth, specifically its fee-for-service payments. Here's a look into the program, why the cuts are happening and what we know so far.

The fines are one of the state's main tools to push local housing agencies to fill empty units, but they were largely meaningless for years because the state failed to enforce them.

Homelessness is a major problem in cities and towns nationwide, including in Massachusetts. An investigation by WBUR and ProPublica finds that many state-subsidized apartments in Massachusetts are sitting empty.
