really wanted, they wanted cohen and donald trump to have the first bite at the apple to review all of the documents to be able to dpleglean out what t claim is privileged. the government objected. this is the procedure that the judge has ordered so far. what s going to happen is cohen s team is going to get an entire digital copy of what was seized. once they receive that, they can turn it over to trump s team. in the meantime, the government is permitted to conduct what you call a mechanical search of the materials that were seized to potentially determine the volume of privileged documents. because it s exactly what tom said. if a special master is just going to be too long or take too long to get up to speed to review these materials, it might make procedural and expedient sense to just let the government look at it and glean out what they need to be able to prosecute their case. let me ask you about the other piece to all of this that
possibility of appointing an independent lawyer to review materials seized from cohen in last week s raid. let me start with tom first. explain the significance here. basically michael cohen s team was saying we have documents that the fbi took in this raid that we think are protected under attorney/client privilege and we don t want everybody seeing them. when will we know whether there s going to be an independent person looking at this or not? it s a great question. it s going to take a little bit of time before we know exactly how this is going to proceed, whether they re going to be looked at by government prosecutors that are segregated that are part of a pri tevilege team or a filter team. or a special master, essentially a referee, a third party person who will look at this and mete out what documents will work as
hominem. the vitriol we ve seen over the last couple of presidential elections was exacerbated and made way more manifest during the trump and clinton campaigns. the reality is hatred is much more the norm in our political discourse than the exception. and i think all of us across the nation are seeing this sort of residue of that, and still really the life of that, in terms of our political discourse. i want to talk with you, all of you, but tom first, about the animosity, the lack of political discourse in this country. there is a new poll out there, pretty shocking numbers here. 63% of democrats say they find conversations with people who have a different view of the president as stressful and frustrating. you ve got 28% finding those conversations to be interesting and informative. check out republicans, 40% say it s stressful, 52% say it s interesting. what s your reaction to these numbers, tom? well, one thing that s going on is that we now have the opportunity to spend way t
a lot to be anxious about living in afghanistan, but that he had no thoughts about leaving. tom knew what it was like to live in afghanistan long term. tom knew the risks of that kind of a trek through that kind of terrain. but i don t think there was any fear in tom. reporter: the christian relief organization for whom tom worked has denied the taliban claim that the group was targeted because they were trying to convert afghans from islam. it was strictly medical aid the group said, eye care specifically in dr. tom s case, and dr. tom and his wife s wife and friends insist his only interest was in helping afghans medically. and to people who some of whom i m sure had never had this kind of care brought to them, given the remote areas in which they live, is there any thought of this group pulling out? this is a pretty horrific thing to happen? the overarching group is still working and expects to continue to work in afghanistan. to this point over the years, they have helped
pyongyang. the bodies of ten medical workers have been recovered and returned back to kabul. they were stopped by the taliban, then taken into some nearby woods, lined up and shot. the british foreign office confirms dr. karen woo is among the dead. the u.s. embassy in kabul is working on positively identifying the americans that were killed. we do know that one of those who died in the ambush was dr. tom little, an optometrist who lived and worked in afghanistan for much of his adult life. nbc s mike taibbi is joining me with the life of this incrediblen. what an incredible life and man. the man known as dr. tom first went to afghanistan more than 30 years ago, and he had and his wife libby, a teacher, raised their three daughters there. tom tom and his work persevered through the soviet occupation, the rule of the taliban who once previously expelled him from the country and the last nine years with post-9/11 warfare. he told his pastor during a visit back home last year in ups
