Company celebrates latest milestone in pilot project that could see up to 600 street cabinets repurposed as EV chargers

A scheme by the UK’s BT Group will see up to 60,000 near-end-of-life street telecoms cabinets repurposed as EV chargers.

BT Group is powering up the first in what could be a network of tens of thousands of EV kerbside charge points repurposed from green street cabinets.

Up to 60,000 could be converted to tackle a shortfall in electric car charging points, the group says.

BT is looking at getting into the EV charging business by trialling a plan to instal charge points alongside the kerbside cabinets used for telecoms

The BT Group (British Telecommunications) is launching the first pilot project to convert its distribution boxes for broadband and telephone cables into charging points for electric cars. The goal is to examine the potential of repurposing up to 60,000 street cabinets.
