The Sandwich Conservation Commission has always taken a dim view of homeowners illegally hacking away at trees and brush in protected conservation areas.
Sometimes property owners clear these wild areas to improve the view from their own homes and back yards. And sometimes homeowners cut back invasive plants and vines and believe they are performing a service.
In the past yearâpossibly as a result of people spending more time at home due to coronavirus restrictionsâincidents of homeowners cutting into the resource areas seem to have increased.
At almost every bimonthly meeting lately, the conservation commission hears about deforestation of protective buffer zones. Earlier this month, after hearing about illegal clearing behind three homes on Knott Avenue in the Town Neck section of town, the commission members decided they must crack down on this chopping.
The US Army Corps has politely asked a state environmental agency to stand downâfor nowâon its questions about the quality of sand that would be scooped from Scusset Beach and deposited on Town Neck Beach.
Michael S. Riccio, the Army Corpsâ project manager for the New England District, said in a recent email to Town Manager George H. (Bud) Dunham that the Corps had erred in asking the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM) to weigh in on the consistency of Scusset sand.
Mr. Riccio said that althoughâin seeking the many permits needed before the Army Corps can dredge and deposit almost 400,000 cubic yards of sand on badly eroded Town Neck Beachâthe Army Corps asked CZM for a âconsistency determinationâ the request came too soon in the lengthy process.
