Alarm surrounding the air quality and climate effects of tailpipe emissions have led to a recent focus on electrifying our transportation. However, recent research has revealed that tailpipe emissions may be little cause for concern when compared to the emissions that come from our tires.

People living close to the Houston Ship Channel are breathing toxic substances, linked to a wide range of illnesses, emitted by facilities that flout regulations and release pollutants into the environment.

The international human rights organization found that people in communities near the ship channel, which are predominantly low-income communities of color, have life expectancies up to 20 years shorter than largely white and affluent areas about 15 miles away. Amnesty International pinned the problem on the petrochemical industry as well as state and federal environmental regulators.
