Teen crime is down in the first weeks of Operation Safe Summer and the city is trying to keep that trend going, especially once school lets out.

In delivering his 2025 City of Richmond Budget speech yesterday, Mayor Levar M. Stoney praised his budget team for “working tirelessly year-round to ensure our financial house is in order.”

City Hall has followed through on expanding winter shelter in the Richmond area, but families with children still are being left out in the cold, the Free Press has confirmed. Operators on Richmond’s Homeless Crisis Hotline are advising homeless adults with children that all shelter space reserved for them is full and that they should call back weekly to see if there is an opening.

Mayor Levar Stoney, several Richmond City Council members, city officials and community leaders met Thursday morning to announce the on-time opening of the shelters and the importance they bring to the citys most vulnerable.

The approvals are first steps in what councilmembers have described as a larger, long-term plan to increase capacity across the city with potentially a shelter in each of its nine magisterial districts.

Richmond is finalizing a plan to have shelters in place for vulnerable citizens during inclement weather by the year’s end.
