Suspect arraigned in killing of 23-year-old in Kalamazoo County

KALAMAZOO, MI – One person has been charged in the killing of a Kalamazoo man.
Joriel Cruz, 19, was arraigned April 12 in Kalamazoo County District Court on one felony count of open murder and one count of felony firearm for the fatal shooting of 23-year-old Phillip Miller, Chief Assistant Prosecutor Scott Brower said Monday, April 12.
Police said a suspect in the shooting was arrested the same day.
Bond was denied for Cruz at his arraignment, Brower said.
Cruz, who is being held at the Kalamazoo County Jail, is scheduled for a preliminary examination conference April 20.

KALAMAZOO, MI A Cass County man facing murder charges in the death of 64-year-old Michael Vines, of Kalamazoo, said he shot Vines out of jealousy, police said.
Jordan Pierre Johnson, 30, of Vandalia, told police he shot the older Kalamazoo man on Feb. 25, because his child and child’s mother had just moved in with Vines earlier that day, court documents state.

KALAMAZOO, MI A 30-year-old Cass County man is being held without bond after being arraigned on a charge of open murder, Monday in Kalamazoo County District Court.
Jordan Pierre Johnson, of Vandalia, is suspected to have killed 64-year-old Kalamazoo resident Michael Vines on Thursday, Feb. 25.
The shooting happened at 8:10 p.m. that evening in the 4500 block of West Main Street, just east of North Drake Road, police said.

KALAMAZOO, MI After a year in which the city of Kalamazoo saw 13 people killed by gun violence, it took just one day in 2021 before the year’s first victim was shot and killed at a West Douglas apartment complex.
Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to a report of shots fired in a building in the 1300 block of Fox Ridge Drive at Fox Ridge Apartments at around 4 p.m. Jan. 1.
