An intense debate was sparked online after an elderly couple simply refused to budge for a pregnant mum and her three children.

A consumer court in Bengaluru has ruled that passengers boarding crowded trains hold the responsibility to board the train, even if they possess reserved tickets. The ruling was made in response to an elderly couples claim for damages from Indian Railways after missing their train to Vijayawada due to overcrowding.

Passenger Reservation System (PRS) will remain shut on Sunday, May 8, for four hours for the maintenance work, the blockage of the system will begin at 11.45 pm on May 8 and last till 4.15 am on May 9, reports PTI.

The incident occurred with the complainant Inder Nath Jha in February 2008 when he was travelling from Darbhanga, Bihar, to Delhi and has since been struggling to get justice.

The Court ordered compensation on the ground that despite making a reservation one month prior to the scheduled date, the complainant had a terrible journey and faced hardship.
