Authorities said 34 long-finned pilot whales beached at the remote Farewell Spit, which has been the site of more than 10 whale strandings over the last 15 years.

More than two dozen long-finned pilot whales have died after stranding at Farewell Spit, a remote beach on New Zealands South Island where such strandings often occur.
