The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday confirmed the nomination of 19 Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Their confirmation comes despite reservations from individuals and groups through petitions and complaints that some of the nominees are card-carrying members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). At least two of them are allegedly under investigation for electoral malpractice.

A group of CSO had faulted the nomination of five of the new INEC RECs for allegedly being partisan and for having questionable past.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has rejected the nomination of some Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by President Muhammadu Buhari.   Buhari on 26 July wrote to the Senate nominating 19 RECs. He also sought the upper chamber’s confirmation of the nominees.   Of the 19 nominees, five were reappointed for a second and final term of five years while 14 others had new appointments.

A coalition of eight civil society organisations has picked holes in the appointment of 19 Resident Electoral Commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission by the President Muhammadu Buhari government. The civil societies called on the Senate to reject the nominees, who included four alleged members of the All Progressives Congress, saying the nomination violated the provisions of the 1999 Nigeria constitution as amended.
