Most morning papers report the start of a three-day strike in the technology and chemical industries, and upcoming labour action in the retail and transport sectors.

Starting on Wednesday, the walkout will affect about 50 companies across the country for three days.

With pay talks stalled in several sectors, Finland may be facing a spate of strikes in industries and retail trade.

Industrial employers will be the first in this round of pay talks to strike a pay bargain. Other Finnish employers have refused to negotiate pay rises until they know the deal agreed by industrial employers.

UPM is citing ‘force majeure’ for its inability to fulfil customer orders due to the strike action crippling its Finnish mills, but unions have rejected this assertion, describing the situation as “a conflict caused by the company pursuing its ideological objectives”.

A strike call by the Trade Union Pro has sparked an unusual war of words between it, the Aviation Union and an employers' group.

The threatened strike action involving thousands of employees at UPM’s Finnish mills is now underway, with the printing industry braced for its likely impact on paper supplies.

Members of the Paperworkers’ Union, the Finnish Electrical Workers´ Union and the Trade Union Pro have started strikes at UPM mills in Jämsänkoski, Kouvola, Lappeenranta, Pietarsaari, Rauma, Tampere and Valkeakoski, Finland. According to the unions, the strikes will continue until 6 o’clock on 22 January 2022 unless a new collective labour agreement is reached before that.
