The Bengaluru Residents Welfare Association (RWA), as part of the 2024-25 BBMP budget recommendations, suggested budget allocation for constituting Flying Squads to tackle SUP at the source and enforce regulations at markets, transport checkpoints, and factories when reported by whistleblowers.

Stating that the BBMP authorities should ensure vacant sites are cleaned and fenced to prevent people from dumping garbage, Veena said: “The vacant sites have become a destination for dumping trash. I want the BBMP to assign marshals to nab those dumping garbage at vacant sites.” ​

Various games, including treasure hunts and park cleaning, were organised for the children. Parents who attended the event expressed their happiness and desired that their children celebrate birthdays in an eco-friendly manner.

Speaking with Bangalore Mirror, Mohan Devegowda of Runaddicts explained that volunteers help organise their events. “We have around 50 volunteers. They collect cutlery from the cutlery bank maintained by Adamya Chetana. They return the cutlery to Adamya Chetana after the event. We have been organising events since 2016. We encourage people not to use plastic. Our aim is to ensure our events have zero waste,’’ said Mohan Devegowda.

As part of this initiative, the SWM team visits various locations in the ward and disburses placards, highlighting the need to make the respective ward free from plastic, among the street vendors and shop owners at markets. The SWM team also identifies the black spots that are needed to be beautified.

Some of the environment-conscious residents and lake activists expressed disappointment over the shoddy rejuvenation work at Srigandadakaval Lake. “The size of the lake has been reduced drastically. It has come down from 6.20 acres to 4 acres. The authorities must make efforts to retain the lake,’’ said Vasu C, a resident of Health Layout.
