One of only three known survivors of the Tulsa Race Massacre has died on October 9 at the age of 102 years old.

Hughes Van Ellis, who was the youngest known survivor of the Tulsa Race Massacre and who spent his latter years pursuing justice for his family and other descendants of the attack on “Black Wall Street,” has died.

Hughes Van Ellis, a World War II veteran and the youngest known Tulsa Race Massacre survivor, died in hospice Monday. He was 102 years old.

Hearts around the nation are mourning the loss of Hughes Van Ellis, one of the last living survivors of 1921’s Tulsa Race Massacre.

Anneliese M. Bruner, great-granddaughter of a Tulsa survivor, spoke to the The Root in order to place the loss of Van Ellis in a historical context.

Hughes Van Ellis was the youngest known survivor of the Tulsa Race Massacre. He was just 6 months old when he and his family escaped what is widely considered one of the most stark examples of racial violence in American history.

A statement released by the family stated, “Mr. Hughes Van Ellis, 102, passed Mon. Oct. 9th at 11:30 am in Denver, Colorado. A loving family man, he was known as “Uncle Redd.” He was among the three last known survivors of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, one of the most horrific acts of racist terrorism on American soil. A WWII war veteran, Mr. Ellis, bravely served America, even as he spent a lifetime awaiting atonement related to the Tulsa Race Massacre.
