The City of Sarasota, Florida, and its residents are getting ready to welcome visitors coming into town for a fun weekend of high-speed boat racing.

The SPAC Foundation gets another 18 months to develop an implementation agreement with the city.

City commissioners held an initial discussion about qualifications for a committee to study the renovation and repurposing of the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall.

For over 35 years, the Van Wezel Foundation, the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall have had a thriving cultural partnership.

Descendants of the Van Wezel family sent a cease and desist demand to the city and SPAC Foundation to stop using the Van Wezel name in promoting and fundraising for a new performing arts center.

 This week the Florida city and a local not-for-profit selected 18 firms for the opportunity to design a new Sarasota Performing Arts Center.

The first meeting of the committee will be Oct. 31.
