A runaway veld fire that has swept through KwaNobuhle for four days has been brought under control.

According to the South African National Defence Union (Sandu) four men and one woman lost their lives while several other SANDF members were injured after being caught in a veld fire at their combat training centre in Lohatla, Northern Cape on Friday.

Six soldiers died and three were injured after a veld fire spread to a military base in the Northern Cape on Friday.

The SA National Defence Union had earlier said five soldiers were killed, but the SA army has clarified that the death toll from the Friday fire that swept through a combat training centre at Lohatla stands at six.

Fatalities and injuries have been reported in a veld fire that spread to a military base in the Northern Cape on Friday, the department of co-operative governance, human settlements and traditional affairs said.

The SPCA is appealing to anyone who can assist their desperate attempts to raise funds as they tend to survivors of the devasting Cape fires.

Sanparks Table Mountain Environmental Services, Working on Fire and the Volunteer Wildfire fighting services were on the scene.
