Veld Fires News Today

Veld fires claimed more than 100 people between 2013 and 2023.

Correctional services minister Ronald Lamola will on Tuesday visit the Brandvlei management area after veld fires in the district that damaged the agricultural stores section in the facility.

Fire crews are contending with strong winds as they battle two firefronts in the area.

Maximum resources have been deployed to the fires that have already ravaged several hectares.

Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse, said that the wind had died down, working in the favour of their efforts.

The Cape Winelands District Municipality says its fire crews and their contracted partners responded to more than 25 small fires over the past weekend.

According to the municipality, over 6,000 vegetation fires were recorded between October of 2022 and January of 2023.

Modise described the camp as one where soldiers live in difficult conditions.

A raging fire fuelled by 70-kilometre winds tore through a military training base in Lohatla shortly before 2 pm on Friday killing six soldiers - and injuring three others.

The wildfire rolled over from Khathu in Gamagara Municipality right through to the military base
