February 16, 2021 Until recently, magnetic fields in the outskirts of galaxies were too faint to be detected. Although it’s still not clear what causes them or how they’re maintained, astronomers have started to create images of their observations of galaxies’ magnetic fields producing beautiful aurora-like effects. See them here. View larger. | Galaxy NGC 5775 and its magnetic field are seen together in this composite image, which is made via radio data from the Karl G. Jansky Very Large...

Meet The Irish Man Searching For Extra Terrestrial Life Listen to this episode Share this article Its a question that has plagued mankind for thousands of years, is this it or is there life beyond Earth? Dr Evan Keane from NUI Galways Centre for Astronomy is one of the people searching for answers, and hes just had a massive boost. Evan has been awarded seed funding to examine how the next generation of Very Large Array radio telescopes can be designed to find extra-terrestrial intelligence. C...

But we still have much to learn, such as what causes them. We know the intense bursts originate in galaxies billions of light years away. We have also used these bursts (called FRBs) to find missing matter that couldn’t be found otherwise. With teams of astronomers around the world racing to understand their enigma, how did we get to where we are now? The first burst The first FRB was discovered in 2007 by a team led by British-American astronomer Duncan Lorimer using Murriyang, the tradit...

Astronomers have discovered two new giant radio galaxies (GRGs) using the MeerKAT radio telescope at the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory in Cape Town, South Africa.
January 19, 2021
Credit: SARAO Two giant radio galaxies have been discovered with South Africa’s powerful MeerKAT telescope. These galaxies are amongst the largest single objects in the Universe and are thought to be quite rare. The fact that MeerKAT detected two of these monsters in a relatively small patch of the sky suggests that giant radio galaxies may actually be much more common than previously thought. This gives astronomers further vital clues about how galaxies have changed and evolved throughout co...

In the past few decades, it has become part of astronomical lore that at the center of every galaxy lurks a giant black hole into which the equivalent of millions or even billions of suns have disappeared.
