Goosepool – with historical links to the airport, the site was referred to as RAF Goosepool by the locals. Goosepool was the name of the wet farmland on the outskirts of Middleton St George, home to a gaggle of geese on which the aerodrome was built on.
McMullen – was a heroic pilot in WW2 who stayed at the controls of his aircraft while his stricken plane was coming down over Darlington. It is said that he steered the plane until all his crew bailed and he avoided ploughing into the town of Darlington, by crashing into a field. He lost his life in the crash landing.
