In our July 2022 edition we recalled the adventures of a reporter sent to Manchester in 1856 to appraise the city’s manufacturing capabilities, a task executed thoroughly and with great enthusiasm.

The viaduct was built in 1861 to carry coal from the north east to the steel furnaces of south and west cumbria. its a wonderful example of victorian engineering. it was closed in 1962 and later given grade—ii listed status, which means that while it cannot be demolished, access could still be lost. wed be truly devastated. we see ourselves as custodians of the viaduct and we want to leave it in a better state than we took it over in, so its really important to us. notjust personal importance,...
