Johnson’s ruling Conservatives tightened their grip on the pro-Brexit former industrial heartlands of northern England in results announced Friday. Rayner is the second in command to Keir Starmer, whose leadership has come in for criticism after the party lost a string of contests including Hartlepool, a northeastern English town it had held for almost 50 years. A person familiar with the matter said Rayner will stay on in her role as deputy leader but Starmer is now looking to appoint a new chair of the party.
