Arvonia Historic Preservation Society director Susan Evans Atchison was the recipient of a We Kan! Award from the Kansas Sampler Foundation Saturday at the Arvonia Fall Festival.

Council Grove practically levitates, but the town is more than a pretty facade. Community members have devoted much time and energy.

Marci Penner, the director of the Kansas Sampler Foundation, is making her way through southeast Kansas as she and her travelling companion, WenDee Rowe, the foundation’s project manager, visit points of interest in Bourbon, Crawford and Cherokee counties over the weekend as part of the Big Kansas Road Trip. 

Marci Penner, Wendee Rowe, and the Kansas Sampler Foundation have been on my radar for around 25 years — almost as long as I’ve been working at the library.

The Big Kansas Road Trip in upper northeast Kansas ended with more than a hundred people at the Kansas Explorers Club meeting waiting anxiously for news about where the fourth annual BKRT would take place. Cheers and applause accompanied the announcement that Bourbon, Cherokee and Crawford counties in southeast Kansas would be the next area to be showcased May 5-8, 2022.
