santa cruz. reporter: no one ever wants a desperate search for a child to end like this. our detectives discovered the body of a young female inside of a dumpster at the complex located behind me. reporter: santa cruz police are confident that the body is that of madyson middleton, although they haven t positively identified her. 8-year-old mahdi vanished from her apartment complex on river street last sunday. authorities arrested a 15-year- old boy who also calls the tannery arts center home. we saw a distraught woman stomping and screaming in the parking lot of the apartment complex where that arrest took place. neighbors say she is the mother of the teen. from what i know, he is very well spoken and has a very kind manner so like i said, it s shocking. reporter: it was a tough scene to process. even for the most seasoned officers. it s heartbreaking. the last time i stood in front of a group like this and spoke was when my two officers were killed and it feels

that that 15-year-old boy might be charged as an adult in the case? reporter: yes. so, of the range of charges the d.a. earlier indicated that, yes, some of those charges did allow that 15-year-old boy to be charged as a adult. we ll get details before noon. kiet do, kpix 5, live in san jose. back to breaking news out of lafayette. a fire is burning on a hillside near highway 24 and the pleasant hill road exit. firefighters are on scene now as you can see. as liza said just a few minutes ago they are not planning to close highway 24 at this point. so far the fire has burned three acres. no word yet on the cause of the fire. a major flare-up from a wildfire in napa and solano counties has forced more evacuations and burned an additional 400 acres on the south side of the fire yesterday. but the flames did remain within the secondary containment lines. kpix 5 s anne makovec is live at the staging area in vacaville where firefighters are about to deal with another hot day.
