CHAMPION â In order to reach a corner of their coverage area and reduce response times, the Carthage Area Rescue Squad will staff the West Carthage Fire Department Station 2 with two part-timers starting May 1.
The ambulance squad which covers the towns of Champion and Wilna has mutual aid from the Natural Bridge and Harrisville ambulances on the northern part of the coverage area. To the west, Lewis County Search and Rescue provides aid in coverage. In the south eastern section, there has not been that overlay.
âIf we are in Carthage and have a call in that area if could be a 25-minute response time,â CARS Chief Amanda Henry said.
FASNY has designated April 24-25 as the 12th annual RecruitNY Weekend.
âIn response to COVID-19, many firehouses across the state are choosing to organize a virtual open house or conduct other digital outreach in an effort to attract new volunteers,â states a news release from the organization. âSome firehouses, based upon local conditions, may still elect to open their doors to the public.â
The FASNY statement points out that âtodayâs firefighters are responding to more calls now than ever before, and these calls are increasingly diverse, between medical emergencies and COVID-19 calls to flooded basements, downed power lines, automobile accidents, and of course for fires. The pandemic has also added challenges surrounding training and new member recruitment.â
CHAMPION â Smoke detectors were still ringing out through an empty and damaged farm house Wednesday morning, hours after fire crews were called to the scene.
At about 2:30 a.m., the West Carthage Fire Department was dispatched to a home at 33720 Route 126 just outside Champion. Crews arrived on scene and flames were showing out the back side of the house. Fire Chief Peter Crump Jr. said there was one woman inside at the time of the fire who had already gotten out safely upon their arrival.
The fire started in the chimney and spread through what appeared to be an attic across the top of the house. Firefighters made a quick hit on the flames by entering the home and containing the flames from much of the rest of house.
