YORK VILLAGE, Maine In preparation for Memorial Day, the Committee for Veterans Affairs, local veterans organizations and community members assembled Friday afternoon to place nearly 1,100 flags alongside veterans graves throughout First Parish Cemetery.
This year, for the first time in recent memory, Gold Star mothers had flags placed on their graves too, according to cemetery superintendent Todd Frederick, who is also a member of the Board of Selectmen.
“We’re really excited to honor the mothers of Gold star recipients, Frederick said. They deserve to be recognized.”
Police Chief Charles Szeniawski was among those to participate.
