The most visited department at the smithsonian. Were told its the most visited and at this point the oldest. We turned 100 years old this year. How fantastic. 100 years old. 100 years old. That is wonderful. I want to ask all of the panelists, why do we care so much about what the first lady wears . What is the impact . What is the legacy . What is the message that the first lady sends . I think shes a symbolic figure. Shes in a way a little bit like the queen of america. And people look at her to see what kind of a female image shes conveying. And i think we also see her as a mother of our country for the time shes in office. And i think that people definitely want to emulate her and, you know, seek guidance, you know, from how she is conducting herself and projecting herself to the world. And i want to remind everyone were going to have a question and answer session at the end of this. If you have questions about any of these things and think you might forget, write them down. And we
Dolley madison who presided other the first inaugural ball in 1809. What did we think about Dolley Madison and the impact she had . Its taking us back. Way back. Way back. Dolley madison was criticized. People criticized here, didnt they, and thought she was too fancy and too much into fashion and too aristocratic, not democratic enough. Not democratic enough, but you could come to Dolley Madisons parties as long as you were appropriately dressed, so for their time very democratic. They did that in versailles as long as you were properly dressed. When you think Dolley Madison grew up as a quaker, so when she married james madison, she broke from this quaker background, so a woman who had been very demurely dressed suddenly had this ability to really just blazen out in amazing clothes and shes fond of reds and yellows and turbans, maybe a nod to that quaker cap. Shes able to fulfill this dazzling vision you have to wonder if this is what she longed to look like as a little girl. Yeah. A
Experts, video tors, and questions from the audience, we tell the stories of americas 45 first lady. Now, we look at two administrations led by widowed president. We begin with Rachel Jackson and emily donaldson. This is about 90 minutes. Rachel was not a fan of anything that took Andrew Jackson away from the hermitage. Her preference apparently didnt strongly influence him. She ran the plantation or the farm and kept everything in order. She might not have been like abigail adams, but she could write a nice letter. She was not as frumpy as she was reputed to be. As he rose in politics, that was an ugly sore. The campaign was so bitterly fought. They went all out, completely calling her a whore. Rachel was good garbage for them. She dreaded going to washington and made the statement, id rather be a doorkeeper in the house of god. Before he left to go to washington, she died. Emily donaldson was 21 years old. She became the white house hostess. For all the negatives washington had to sa

When we acquired that book Jonathan Karp down here, and ask if there was anything we could do for the ebook specifically and we brainstorm and some ideas and talked about when the right time to act on those ideas might be but we were thinking of that as a Digital Product from the very beginning. My role is National Media in partnership with the communications team. What is an effective Media Campaign . Where do you go . Depends on what the book is and it depends on what the potential for the book is. There is what i think the best topdown campaigns which are campaigns like Hillary Clintons which begin with National Media and breakout from there. A few big hits generate a number of things that create themselves. My role with the clinton title has been to work on the marketing side of that which involved a website for the book dedicated to the book, Facebook Page, production of promotional videos, the release of content on the web. At my role up to now has been the Digital Marketing role
